What Getting My First Hate Email Taught Me About Business

If you know anything about building an email list for your ideal audience, you KNOW with every fiber of your being that it is NOT for the faint of heart.

That’s why I still get so excited whenever I get notification pings from new subscribers. It reminds me that I am finding my people, and that is always worth celebrating! (Join the party here).

Well, back when I first started getting into the world of online creation, that instant hit of dopamine was even more amplified. And one evening while I was sitting at dinner, I got this ping on my phone. Excitedly, I opened up my inbox – only for that excitement to quickly vanish.

A discruntled reader emailed me to inform me that she would be unsubscribing asap because my content wasn’t something she wanted to keep reading.

Maybe it wasn’t a hate email per se – but in that moment, newbiepreneur Cassidy who just wanted to make everyone happy felt absolutely crushed. I had worked SO hard and this woman had seen all that work and felt compelled to WALK AWAY. I was mortified.

For a brief moment, I wallowed in self-pity and questioned my life choices.

And then I realized, this was probably the best thing that could happen for my business…here’s why:

She wasn’t my ideal audience.

I had slowly began peeling myself away from the mindset that to reach more people, I had to talk to everyone. I had been refining my message and became crystal clear on who it was I wanted to help. And it was working. A lot of weeks, I would receive feedback on posts or emails that would reinforce that I was on the right path.

Your messaging is meant to attract your dream people – and repel those you have no desire to work with.

So when she said she was leaving, even after she had seen what I was all about, it was a good thing. I wasn’t what she needed and she wasn’t someone who I could truly help in the long run. And that’s okay! Me and my business are not for everyone, and they are never meant to be.

I know what you may be thinking…

    “But I’ll work with anyone!”

“Won’t this limit who I reach?”

“What if there aren’t enough people?”

And I want to gently remind you that that is coming from a mindset of scarcity and fear. I totally understand because it’s hard out here. You’ve got bills to pay and food needs to be on the table.

But when you clearly define who your ideal audience is, what their needs are, and how you can help them, you find that you are in a better position to actually reach and attract more people. Because suddenly, you are exactly what they are looking for.

There are an abundance of people, women, businesses, and more that need what you have! You just got to figure who they are and how to talk to them.
